Also, we show what to order at our kiosk with the student discount. We are a coffee kiosk, not the university, so check every date with the Registrar.

The two-week plan: sessions, not marathons

A midterm study plan for college works best in blocks. So split each subject into sessions of an hour or two. Then take a real break between them.

  • Week one, early. First, list every exam and paper, with its date. Next, rank them by how much each one worries you.
  • Week one, late. Then give your two hardest subjects the most sessions. Also, study them when you are fresh.
  • Week two, early. Check your grades as they post. So you know which class needs help.
  • Week two, late. Finally, decide on any drop before October 30, and plan your spring classes.

Also, change your setting now and then. For example, a new table can wake up a tired brain. Our post on how to study smarter with coffee has more ideas.

Caffeine timing: when a latte helps and when it costs you sleep

When should you stop drinking coffee before bed? Caffeine has a half-life of several hours. So a late-afternoon cutoff protects sleep before an exam.

Here is a simple rule. Have your coffee in the morning or the early afternoon. Then switch to water for the rest of the day. For example, if your exam is at 9am, skip the late latte the night before. Sleep does more for your memory than one more hour of notes.

You can read about caffeine and sleep at the sleep research site at sleepfoundation.org. We do not give medical advice, so ask a doctor if caffeine is a concern for you. Our post asks is Puerto Rican coffee strong, if you want to know what is in the cup.

Which table for which session: the map, revisited

We are a kiosk inside The Shoppes at Solana. So the tables around us are shared with shoppers. However, you can match the table to the task.

  • Laptop sessions. Look for a table with an outlet. So bring your charger.
  • Flashcards and reading. Any open table works, because you do not need a plug.
  • Group review. Pick a larger table, and then keep your voices low.

Also, time your visit. Weekday mornings after we open and mid-afternoons are the calmest windows. If you want to study near UTEP on the Westside, our guide covers the best Westside study coffee shop.

The student discount order for each block

Show a valid student ID at the kiosk, and you get 10 percent off every drink through October. Each line below shows the menu price first, and then the price with your ID. Of course, prices are before tax, and the state explains sales tax at the Texas Comptroller site at comptroller.texas.gov.

  • Morning block. A 12 ounce hot latte is $4.00 on the menu, so $3.60 with your ID.
  • Early afternoon block. A 16 ounce iced latte is $4.50 on the menu, so $4.05 with your ID.
  • Late block. A 12 ounce hot chocolate is $3.00 on the menu, so $2.70 with your ID.

So the late block skips the coffee on purpose. Also, keep our hours in mind. We open at 8am Monday to Saturday and at 11am on Sunday. We close at 8pm Monday to Thursday, at 9pm on Friday and Saturday, and at 6pm on Sunday.

What the drop deadline means, and deciding before the last day

When is the drop deadline? It is October 30, 2026. After that date, a grade of W is not a sure thing. So the choice gets harder if you wait.

We are not advisors, and we will not tell you what to drop. However, we can tell you this. A choice made on October 27 is calmer than one made at 11pm on October 30. Therefore, talk to your advisor early. Also, ask the financial aid office how a drop affects you.

Spring registration opens October 26: plan the next semester in the same chair

Spring registration opens October 26. So you can plan next semester while this one is fresh in your mind. For example, note which class times worked for you and which did not. Then build a spring schedule that fits how you study.
