Dia de los Muertos El Paso 2026: Events, Bread and Coffee
Dia de los Muertos El Paso 2026 falls on November 1 and 2, a Sunday and a Monday. So this is the week to plan. In short, Día de los Muertos is a time to remember the people we have lost, with altars, flowers, food and family. El Paso marks it with care. However, the events are spread across the city, and the details come out late. Below, we list the events, where to find pan de muerto on the Westside, and the coffee we would pour with it. Then we give you our hours for the weekend.
Dia de los Muertos El Paso 2026: the short answer
Two days, one city that does it right
First, Día de los Muertos is not a sad holiday, and it is not Halloween. In fact, it is a welcome. Families build an altar, called an ofrenda, and set out photos, candles and marigolds. Then they add the food and drink their loved ones enjoyed.
So the two days are about memory and joy at once. Of course, here on the border, that tradition runs deep. Therefore, you will find it in homes, in churches and in public spaces across the city. Our post lists more free things to do in El Paso through the year.

Why a cortado on Puerto Rican coffee pairs with pan de muerto
What coffee goes with pan de muerto? We suggest a cortado. It is $3.50 before tax, and it balances the sweet bread with a small, smooth shot of Puerto Rican coffee.
Basically, a cortado is espresso with a little steamed milk. So it is short and strong, but not sharp. By contrast, pan de muerto is soft and sweet, with sugar on top. Therefore, a big sweet latte would be too much next to it. In short, the cortado pairing lets the bread be the sweet part.
Also, our coffee is low in acid, with chocolate and caramel notes. Naturally, those notes sit well with bread and sugar. Our guide covers what Puerto Rican coffee tastes like, and our post has more on espresso paired with sweet treats.
The Caribbean and the Borderland: a shared table
Our coffee comes from Puerto Rico, and Día de los Muertos comes from Mexico. So we will not pretend the holiday is ours. However, the two places share a habit. In both, family gathers around a table, and coffee is also on it.
Therefore, we are glad to have a small part in the day. If a loved one took their coffee a certain way, order it that way. Then raise the cup to them. The National Coffee Association writes about coffee and its traditions at the association site at ncausa.org.
