Best Fall Latte Flavors: Every Syrup and Sauce, Ranked

The best fall latte flavors are the ones that work with the coffee, so we ranked every syrup and sauce we carry. That is 13 syrups and 3 sauces, all weighed against our Puerto Rican coffee. Standing at the kiosk with a line behind you is not the time to guess. So read this first. Then you can walk up and order like you have done it all year. Also, this is our list and our opinion, so feel free to argue with it at the counter.

Best fall latte flavors: the short answer

Quick answer
The best fall latte flavors at The Coffee Spot are toasted marshmallow, hazelnut and caramel. All three sit well on the chocolate and caramel notes of Puerto Rican coffee. Syrups are 25 cents each, and sauces are 50 cents each. So you can add one to any drink at the kiosk or on DoorDash.

Sixteen add-ons, one line, no time to guess

Sixteen choices sound like fun until it is your turn to order. Then, as customers tell us, they say "vanilla" and move on. However, some flavors lift this coffee, and some bury it.

So how did we rank them? We asked one question of each. Does it work with a smooth, low-acid coffee that already tastes of chocolate and caramel? If yes, it moved up. Our guide explains what Puerto Rican coffee tastes like, and the Specialty Coffee Association keeps the tasting terms at the association site at sca.coffee.

Best fall latte flavors at a glance

The table below sums up the ranking, so you can find your tier fast.

Describes how The Coffee Spot ranks its syrups and sauces for fall: what each tier means, where it comes from, and what a customer notices in the cup.

The best fall latte flavors, top tier: toasted marshmallow, hazelnut, caramel

What is the best fall syrup? Toasted marshmallow leads our ranking, with hazelnut and caramel close behind. All three sit well on the chocolate-caramel notes of Puerto Rican coffee.

  • 1. Toasted Marshmallow. It tastes like a campfire, so it is our October drink of the month. A toasted marshmallow syrup latte is the first one to try.
  • 2. Hazelnut. Nutty and warm. In fact, a hazelnut latte in fall is hard to get wrong.
  • 3. Caramel. The coffee already has caramel notes. Therefore, this syrup just turns them up.

So how should you order one? Start with a plain latte, hot or iced, and add a single syrup. Also, keep it to one flavor the first time, so you can taste what it does. Then, if you want it richer, add oat milk for 50 cents or whipped cream for 50 cents.

The strong middle: French vanilla, pistachio, coconut

These three are good all year. However, they do not shout "fall" the way the top tier does. So order them when you want something softer.

  • 4. French Vanilla. Rich and round. Also, it is a safe pick for a first visit.
  • 5. Pistachio. Nutty like hazelnut, and then a little sweeter.
  • 6. Coconut. A nod to the island. It works best iced, such as in a 16 ounce iced latte.
  • 7. Vanilla. The classic. It is never wrong, so it lands in the middle.

The sauces: mocha, caramel, white chocolate and where each belongs

A sauce is thicker than a syrup. So it changes the feel of the drink as well as the taste. Each sauce is 50 cents.

  • Mocha. Chocolate on chocolate. Therefore, it belongs in a hot latte on a cool morning.
  • Caramel sauce. Richer than the syrup. For example, try it under cold foam on an iced latte.
  • White chocolate. The sweetest of the three. So pair it with a bold shot, or with matcha.

Also, you can mix a syrup with a sauce. For example, hazelnut syrup with mocha sauce tastes like a chocolate hazelnut spread. However, two add-ons are plenty. In short, a third one tends to hide the coffee, and the coffee is why you came.

Sugar-free picks: vanilla, caramel, hazelnut

Do we have sugar-free syrups? Yes. We carry sugar-free vanilla, sugar-free caramel and sugar-free hazelnut. Each one is 25 cents, the same as the regular kind.

So which one wins for fall? Sugar-free hazelnut, for the same reason hazelnut ranks high. So if you searched for sugar free syrup coffee in El Paso, we have three to choose from. The FDA explains sugar substitutes and labels at the agency site at fda.gov.

The ones that can wait for summer

Cherry, strawberry and lavender are not bad flavors. However, they are bright and fruity, and fall asks for warm and toasty. So we put them at the bottom of a fall list.

Of course, you can still order them. For example, they shine in cold drinks, and our post covers iced Puerto Rican coffee drinks. We will rank them again when the heat comes back.

Three October builds our baristas make most

Here are three builds to try this month. Each one lists the parts and the price, so you know the total before you order.

  • The drink of the month. A 12 ounce hot latte with Toasted Marshmallow syrup. That is $4.00 plus 25 cents, so $4.25.
  • The hazelnut mocha. A 12 ounce hot latte with Hazelnut syrup and Mocha sauce. That is $4.00 plus 25 cents plus 50 cents, so $4.75.
  • The iced caramel cloud. A 16 ounce iced latte with Caramel syrup and cold foam. That is $4.50 plus 25 cents plus 75 cents, so $5.50.

Can you add syrups on DoorDash? Yes. First, choose a drink. Next, add the syrup or sauce. Then pick up at the kiosk in front of the White Horse Statue. Our post explains coffee delivery in El Paso, and our guide pairs espresso with sweet treats from the pastry case.
